Stay Safe And Seen As The Dark Nights Draw In
It's that time of year when the darker nights and mornings start drawing in and people begin travelling to and from work in the dark
. Even though it happens every autumn, it still seems to take everyone by surprise when they look out the window at 6pm to see the sun going down.
If you commute to work by bike, then there are a few essential pieces of kit you need to get before winter really sets in. A set of bike lights should really be top of the list, not least because it's illegal to ride without them in the dark. The law states you should switch your bike lights on as soon as daylight starts to fade.
You need a white front light and a rear red light, as well as reflectors on your pedals and the back of the bike. It's recommended, thought not a legal requirement, to use a flashing rear light and a constant front one.
It's also advisable to wear some form of high-visibility clothing if you're going to be riding in the dark. There's a whole host of neon jackets, waistcoats, arm bands, leg clips and bag covers on sale that will help to make you more noticeable to drivers, other cyclists and also pedestrians.
Cycling in the dark without wearing hi-vis clothing really isn't a good idea, as you run the risk of someone simply not seeing you and causing an accident. You or someone else could easily be injured, not to mention the damage to your bike.
It's always better to be safe than sorry - so make sure you have the right bike lights and wear some form of hi-vis over your normal clothing. It's also a good idea to carry some spare batteries just in case the ones in your lights run out, alongside other normal essentials such as a puncture repair kit.
Of course, it goes without saying that you should always wear a helmet when out and about on your bike, especially with the increased risk of an accident that winter brings. You might also want to get yourself a decent pair of gloves, which will help to keep your hands toasty as well as protecting them if you do come off your bike. You can add reflective strips to both your helmet and gloves to help make you even more visible.
Winter doesn't have to prevent you going out on your bike - just make sure you take the right steps to ensure you're safe and seen when out on the road.
