Staying Safe In The Snow

As the winter season approaches, more people are pulling out their survival gear-jackets

, hats, mittens and skiis (hey, you have to enjoy the snow somehow!) So with thousands of people hitting the slopes, its important to remember your safety rules for enjoying the snow without accidents.

Skiing and snowboarding accidents can happen very easily, from the beginner who panics and forgets how to stop to the very experienced, whos decided to test out the newest jump. Combine all these levels of skiiers and snowboarders and you can have an accident very quickly. While the numbers arent high 25 skiers and 13 snowboarders died in the winter of 2009 as a result of accidents in the United States.

Typical snow accidents include:

Collisions between two skiiers or snowboarders

Collisions with trees, fences and barriers

Lack of knowledge or training

Equipment Failure

Injuries can be sustained on both skiis and boards, but many physicians agree that boarders have a higher risk of injury. Injuries sustained from accidents can include fractures, sprains and even more life-threatening spinal injuries. According to a recent study from the CDC, snowboarding accounts for more injuries than any other outdoor activity and is showing an increase in spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.

The study also showed that children and young adults were more prone to sustaining severe injuries, leading the NSAA to create a campaign to educate skiiers and snowboarders of the need for helmets on children. The campaign is proving to be helpful, as about 75% of skiers and boarders under the age of 17 wear helmets.

Other important ways to stay accident-free on the slopes are to:

Control your speed

Respect other riders

Dont goof off while on the slope

Choose a safe route

Wear protective eyewear

Stay on guard and alert

Stay out of the way when walking up the hill

Lookout for injured persons

While skiing and snowboarding accidents arent usually deadly, its important to keep safe on the slopes and respect the sport. If youre a beginner skier or snowboarder, consider using wrist guards, knee pads and even a padding for your tailbone. You may feel silly, but no one will notice and it could save you a lot of unnecessary pain in the long-run. Make sure you receive the best training and only take the slope if you are sure youre ready.
