Steel Building Insulation Advantages And Disadvantages

The largest advantage to using insulation in a steel building is that steel panels will transfer both heat and cold from the outside of the building

. Using insulation will reduce the effectiveness of the transfer of temperature, therefore keeping the steel building colder in the Summer and warmer in the Winter.

Another advantage would be avoiding condensation and dripping due to humidity in the air and humidity coming from the concrete not being 100% cured. In both of these cases moisture will build up on the steel panels and cause them to drip. The insulation does not allow the moisture to get to the steel panels on the inside so they will not drip and this is called a "vapor barrier". The other way a building can get condensation is from the exterior panels frosting up in cold weather areas and then the frost transfers through to the red iron on the inside and during the day when the inside of the building gets warmer, the frost will start to thaw and again cause dripping. When you put metal building insulation over the red iron before the steel sheeting goes down, the insulation will act as a "thermal break" between the outside sheeting and the internal framing so the frost cannot transfer from the outside of the building to the inside and eliminates that type of condensation as well.

Unfortunately, insulation has been known to trap mold within buildings of any material type not just steel buildings. This problem usually occurs when proper installation procedures are not followed or improper maintenance techniques are used. Wildlife, such as birds and squirrels, can cause issues with insulation inside of a metal building. Animals can tear out and damage insulation while attempting to make their own home in your building. Just being aware of what is going on inside your building can help prevent wildlife from finding a sanctuary within your building and damaging the premises.

Fiberglass insulation is the most common type of insulation installed within a steel building. One side of this insulation has a white or black vinyl covering to assist with keeping moisture out. The insulation with the white facing is used more often because when facing the interior of the building it provides for additional light reflection making the building brighter without expending more energy.

Insulation materials come in a variety of forms and products. Some insulation types include: fiberglass, sprayed-on insulation, rigid or hard board, and there are steel building panels with installation already attached for easy installation. Metal buildings can handle a variety of insulation types which are usually determined by the final application of the building. The benefits of installing insulation within the building overcome any potential drawbacks that insulation might create within your steel buildings.
