Steel's part in the search for a sustainable, domestic energy source is multi-faceted. New technology is allowing the United States to tap natural gas sources previously thought to be unattainable. These newly innovated methods utilize steel piping as an underground infrastructure for the transport of crude petroleum fuel. Areas rich in natural gas are experiencing a population explosion. Those small towns depend on steel piping to expand their water and sewer systems; they also rely on steel to provide structured support for new construction.

Wind farms provide electricity for many parts of the United States and steel is in high demand for those areas. Gargantuan fans propelled by crosswinds generate power for nearby towns; these huge fans are constructed of steel. And the modern need for steel products doesn't end there. Steel is a key component of thermal and hydroelectric power plants; it is used in transmission lines, substations and cogeneration plants. Whether utilized for transporting fuel or for harnessing wind, steel is an integral part of procuring valuable energy.

The creation of solid civil infrastructure is dependent on the steel industry. Nearly every structure erected today is comprised at least partly of steel. Roadways, bridges, railroads, tunnels all need steel to ensure their safety and stability. Marine facilities, piers and canals require steel's strength for their construction.

From a humanitarian front, steel is being used to bring clean water to impoverished countries. Many parts of Africa and surrounding areas experience drought for most of the year. Steel piping allows fresh water to be transported from uncontaminated rivers and streams; separate pipes manage sewage by carrying away waste. Similarly, irrigation canals allow the progression of agriculture where growing crops would have been impossible before, due to a lack of usable water.

As the mankind's dependence on technology grows, communication has become a vital resource. With the exception of just one or two countries, most of world has become reliant on the internet. Telecommunications utilize steel to provide structure for transmission lines and cabling. Towers and antennae vital for cell phone use are comprised of steel. Without these steel products, communication as the modern world knows it would be impossible.

In every class of people, in every country, in every climate, steel can be found. Without the support of steel beams, offices, stores, schools, government buildings and even hospitals would not be the safe structures we trust them to be. There is practically no aspect of modern life that does not involve steel in some way. As the New Year dawns, it will be exciting to see what the future holds for one of man's most used, versatile products.
