Stephen Colbert Tickets - The Word On Referendum 71
Stephen Colbert has gained national attention for his late-night comedy central television personality on the Colbert Report
. Frequently, Colbert takes on the political and social issues of the day, never shying away from poking fun at the various hypocrisies that arise out of controversial statements and positions. Recently Colbert satirized the debate over Referendum 71, which has been a reoccurring topic in Washington State.
Referendum 71 asks voters to either approve or reject the Legislature's recent expansion of domestic partnership to grant all of the legal rights and benefits that go hand in hand with marriage, while still barring gay couples to actually marry. The current debate revolving around the referendum boils down to whether the names of the petition signers should be part of the public record.
The Report host took the gay marriage opponents to task in the usual "Colbert" way when he proclaimed, "I don't believe it is a choice, I believe you're born thinking gays don't have the right to get married or even be joined in union. And folks, the gays have no right to out those people." He continued in his evisceration of Protect Marriage Washington by showing an advertisement sponsored by the group that claimed that Scandinavia was a country and that in 2004 gay marriage was legalized there, leading to doubled suicide rates and a spike in illegal drug use.
Colbert mockingly called the advertisement "terrifying," when he said, "And that ad is no less terrifying just because there is no country called Scandinavia, none of the countries in Scandinavia passed gay marriage laws in 2004 and the statistics on suicide and drug use are made up." Stephen Colbert first started gaining national attention when he joined The Daily Show in 1997. He was part of an original cast of four correspondents, with Craig Kilborn serving as the host. In 1999, Jon Stewart took over the anchor desk hosting duties and the show itself began to take on a much more political tone. The Daily Show quickly rose in popularity during the latter part of the 2000 U.S. presidential election season.
During his time on The Daily Show, Colbert developed a correspondent character who he has claimed "has a knack for making generous use of humorous fallacies of logic when explaining his point of view." That same character traveled with Colbert to his present gig on The Colbert Report. Colbert has expanded the character a bit, often saying that his personality is specifically modeled after a blustery right-wing talk show pundit; he has drawn inspiration from cable talk shows like The O'Reilly Factor and Scarborough Country.
Colbert has been the recipient of three Emmy Awards as a writer for The Daily Show and also won the award for Colbert Report in 2008. Don't miss an episode of the Colbert Report and the next time you are in New York City, see a taping live!
