Steps For Moving On When The Relationship Has Ended

Ending a relationship can be one of the most difficult things to have to go through

. Some people can handle a break up much better than other people, it is all dependent on the individual, time invested in a relationship, whether or not the relationship was healthy and if there are children involved.

The first step in moving on once the relationship has ended is to give yourself permission to grieve. Many people feel that a break-up feels very close to that of losing a loved one to death. In fact it is almost harder than coping with death because with losing a loved through death, there is no alternative. You cannot bring someone back to life, it is what it is. With a break-up; almost always the person that suggested the break-up has already moved on emotionally and perhaps physically if there was an affair involved. Meanwhile the other party (the person that was dumped) still has emotional ties to the relationship and is often in a state of shock when the relationship has come to a sudden end. Therefore; it is important to allow grieving for the "death" of the relationship so that you can cope, accept it and then move on to live your life.

Many people ask how long does the grieving last or how long does it take to get over your ex and of course it all depends on the relationship and the people involved but a general rule of thumb is that if takes a person half of the amount of time the relationship lasted. So, if you were with someone for 2 years then it could take you 1 year to fully get over the relationship. Then again if the relationship was verbally abusive or one of the individuals was lazy and had no job, it might only take the person that got sick of supporting the other member even less to get over the relationship.

The next step after grieving is to live again. You live again by taking time for yourself. Further develop hobbies you had prior to the relationship or pick up new hobbies. Enjoy time being single before rushing into another relationship. Enjoying life as a single is healthy. When you enjoy time as a single and invest time into yourself you can help improve on your faults in the previous relationship so that you can change those things before you ever get involved in the next relationship.
