Steps To Take After A Severe Car Accident

Automotive accidents are a leading cause of non-medical deaths in the United States

. Though advances in automotive technologies have made vehicles safer overall, we may never see a day when the streets and freeways are free of trauma.

This idea especially hits home when you are the one seriously injured--possibly even crippled, temporarily or permanently--by a dangerous collision with another driver. You are left confused, stunned, devastated, and possibly very afraid and angry since the future you had planned could be in jeopardy. What now?

This is never an easy time, even in the best-case scenario (e.g. you're going to recover completely, your friends and family are there to help, etc.). Let me give you some tips to help you muddle through it as best you can.

The first step is to get real. Your doctors and/or surgeons will discuss with you your current condition. Listen to what they say so that you can have realistic expectations about your recovery and how your life will be different. If they say your body may never return to its normal function, then it's okay to hope for (and work for) a miracle, but don't shut out their advice.

Be humble enough to ask for help as you begin to adjust. Friends and family will likely be willing to step in at first, but they have lives to lead, too, so investigate home care in your area. You can ask for assistance either full-time or part-time--or a mix of both, depending upon your personal needs. You may want to begin with a full-time assistant until you have more completely adjusted to the changes you have to make.

Medical bills can begin to pile up quickly, and your insurance company may not cover enough to reduce your stress and make the financial aspect more manageable. Even if you aren't sure who was at fault by the standards of the law, it would be wise to contact a lawyer as early as possible to see what kind of case you have. This may also involve applying for disability if you are unable to work because of the injuries you sustained.

Traumatic events like an automobile accident can leave emotional scars as well as physical ones. Don't hesitate to see a counselor, talk to a clergyman, or find a support group that deals specifically with the issues you are facing. Take up hobbies or begin habits that are soothing to you so that you have an outlet for the variety of emotions you are struggling with.
