Steroids effects on the body are nothing to take lightly by any athletic steroids user. Whether an athlete has used steroids for a short period of time or has been a long time user, these drugs are not to be used for sporting purposes and the dosages used are often dangerously high. Over time, the damage to the body can be catastrophic and even be deadly. Steroids are drugs that when used medically are given in doses of one to five milligrams daily. Athletes who are abusing steroids often take hundreds of milligrams daily. Just imagine the damage being done to the body.

The risks of heart attacks and strokes are multiplied in steroid users due to several things the drugs do to the body. Steroids cause an increase in the production of the bad kind of cholesterol in the blood. When this cholesterol builds up in the blood, blood clots form. Those blood clots pose a serious danger to the body, for they can cause heart attacks and strokes. Other steroids effects on the body are with blood pressure. Due to the rapid increase in body weight when abusing steroids, the blood pressure often climbs high. This leaves users at a high risk for cardiovascular events.

Steroids effects are often psychological. Case reports over time have shown that long term steroid abuse can lead to behavior that is very much like bipolar behavior. A mania that has characteristics of aggressiveness and reckless behavior is indicative of what is called 'roid rage'. Some athletes even seek out these feelings, saying that they are motivated to work harder and the heighten aggression leads to better performance on the sports field. This type of mania is nearly always followed by deep depression that has been known to lead to suicidal behavior.

Learning about the long term effects of steroids on athletes makes one wonder about some mysterious athlete deaths that happen from time to time. Steroids effects are nothing to mess around with. The long term abuse of these drugs leads to some series damage done to the body and even death. Sports are not worth the damage and risk of the steroids effects. Many athletes do not think beyond the performance enhancement abilities of the drugs. Sometimes they may even be unaware or in denial of the problems steroids can cause. Long term steroid use is almost a guaranteed ticket to damage or death.
