Stink bugs are insects that originated from Asia. They were not spotted in the US until the 1990's. The first spotting was in Allenton, Pennsylvania. It has been reported that they are over 250 species of stink bugs. You can locate them in yards, fields, meadows, on crops and even in your homes.

Stink bugs are part of the insect family called Pentatomidae. Pentatomiadae are insects that have wings, 6 legs and antennas. Stink bugs can fly. They are inside the order of Hemiptera. Hemiptera insects have sucking mouthparts that they use for feeding. These bugs are also referred to shield bugs. Should you ever spot one, you may notice that their body is shaped like a shield and they have a triangular shape on the leading of their back. They are found in diverse colors from brown, green and black. Not all stink bugs came from Asia, the brown and green were already native to the United States.

Stink bugs are said to be harmless to humans but there have been lately news that stink bugs will bite. They have piercing sucking mouthpieces and most most likely they have poked humans. They are not poisonous and if a bite occurs, you can treat it like other bug bites.

Stink bugs get their name honestly because they create a foul odor that stinks. Stink bugs are equipped with a defense mechanism. When they feel that they are threatened or disturbed they will release an odor from their glands. This is a nuisance when they are in your home. The odor is also utilized to notify other stink bugs of the danger. If they come into your house and hibernate, other stink bugs can follow because of the smell. They are also know to return again when it starts getting cold and because the smell lingers on long after you can smell it.

You may not see considerably of them in the course of the cold months because they hibernate inside the winter. In the warmer months is whenever you will see stink bugs inside the masses. This is the time of the year when they start to reproduce and lay their eggs. Stink bugs lay their eggs on the underside of leaves. They lay 40-60 eggs at a time.
