Stop A Divorce In Its Tracks With These Tips

Many people find themselves in the devastating position where they are faced with a spouse who is requesting a divorce. If your spouse is asking for a divorce and you want to find a way to salvage the marriage and stop a divorce from taking place, then you will need to take some time to really evaluate the relationship.

While there are certainly many different reasons why one person in the relationship may be looking for a separation or divorce, it is important to realize that even if an affair or other person has entered into the dynamics of your marriage, there is still hope. You can stop a divorce at any time and reconcile your marriage if that is what both parties want.

The first thing you should do when confronted with the news that your spouse wants a divorce is to refrain from overreacting. You do not want to start begging, pleading, name calling or belittling; none of these actions is going to get you any closer to your hope of fixing the relationship and saving the marriage. It can be hard not to get too emotional, but you need to take a step back and look at the marriage for what it really is. Chances are there are things that you have said or done that have contributed to the breakdown of the marriage and those are the things you will need to work on and take responsibility for. However, this is not the time to point out all the faults your partner has, especially if your intention is to stop a divorce from occurring.

Your partner is probably seeking a divorce because they feel that they have lost their love for you, or they think the problems in the relationship are so big that they will not be able to overcome them. No one wants to spend their life living in a relationship where they are unhappy. So, you will need to find the areas that you can change in yourself and concentrate on that, not on your partner and their faults. It's not that your partner has no faults or has not contributed to the breakdown of the marriage; it is just that you will need to step back and give it some time before those issues are addressed.

Where there was once love, this feeling can be restored. Sometimes we think we have fallen out of love because we no longer have those intense feelings we once had. We have slipped into a complacent way of living and the rut of going to work, doing chores, taking care of the kids, paying bills and all the other routine necessities of life have left you not showing the kind of care and compassion that you did in the beginning. If you can, try to show your spouse small acts of kindness. Do not push them into changing their mind, but you can apologize for the things you have done in the marriage and let them know that you intend to change. Then, do it. Start working on making those changes immediately and don't throw it in your spouse's face, let them see your new attitude and behavior rather than speaking about it. They will notice.

When you hear that your spouse wants to leave the relationship, or wants a divorce, it can be devastating. Remember, there are things you can do to help resurrect that marriage; but you need to not push your spouse further away.
