Stop Dark Circles and Eye Bags under Eyes Make you Look Old and Tired
We have been discussing before how irritating and depressing these dark under eye circles and under eye bags can be and the fact that it's not always "burning the candle at both ends" that can create this problem for us.
Although it is not the only cause, depriving yourself of sleep can be a contributing factor . Therefore perhaps we should look into why sleep is a problem for so many of us these days and in particular how it can have an effect on our skin.
Apart from the fact of course that we merely stay up too late, stress and worry about all sorts of things can cause lack of sleep. How can you relax and "drop off " for instance if you have something on your mind or you have a worry about something that just will not go away. You lie awake thinking and worrying and then you get cross that you can't sleep so you toss and turn in your bed and in the end you think I might as well get up and put the kettle on and try again a little later. Is that familiar?
Well now and then it can happen to all of us but if every night or most nights this is a problem for you eventually the lack of sleep will have a detrimental effect on your skin.
Too many nights without sleeping properly can result in an increase in stress hormones such as cortisol. Over a period of time your body, skin and overall health will begin to suffer as the hormone cortisol is continually secreted into your bloodstream.
Younger persons are more easily able to quickly become more relaxed but as we age it becomes more difficult to move from a stressed state of mind to one more relaxed.
Too much cortisol for too long can have an effect on skin aging and that includes the creation of those dark under eye circles and puffiness. Skin looks tired you'll have a sallow complexion, you look washed out because less blood is being pumped to the vessels under the skin. Too much can also weaken the immune system and increase blood sugar levels. It is therefore important that we find a way as quickly as possible to relieve stress levels, become more relaxed and in turn get a better nights sleep.
So, how can we try to overcome those sleepless nights?
Firstly try to get into a routine just as we did when much younger, make a time, a regular time for going to bed.
Try not to eat heavy meals too late; you should eat dinner around two hours or so before bedtime.
A warm bath before bed will help relax you.
A warm milky drink before bed can help to reduce anxiety and bring on sleep.
Before bedtime write down your anxiety, write down what you have to do tomorrow and keep it by the bed. If you wake and think of other things write them down too, relieving your mind of them in this manner may help sleep return more quickly.
Regular daily exercise can help, walking in the evening before bedtime can be help in promoting sleep too.
Avoid too much of tea, coffee, and cigarettes late in the day, in other words too many stimulants.
The term "Beauty Sleep" is based on the assumption that we all sleep well; you know that long eight hours of deep relaxing sleep. Whilst we sleep skin takes on a repair and rejuvenating process, thus making us more beautiful. However, reality is that many of us find sleep difficult and it is likely that we are less beautiful because of it.
Taking pills and tablets is certainly an option but handling stress, eating sensibly and taking more exercise can sometimes induce a better quality of sleep.
