Separation from the Pack Dogs are very sociable creatures. They're used to being with a group or family. Your dog will usually whine because of separation anxieties when you're not paying attention to him or when you're out of the house.

Help your dog get comfortable in being alone by placing toys and food near his crate. Doing this will help your dog associate his crate with happiness- even when you're not there. You can also place one of your old clothes in his crate. He'll be able to smell this even when you're gone, so he'll think that you're with him all the time.

This short exercise should stop dog whining due to loneliness or separation: 1. Place his toys near his kennel or at his area. Play with your dog for a few minutes. 2. While your pet is still busy playing. Silently go out of the room. Your dog will whine as soon as he realizes that you've left. 3. Don't go back to him until he has finished whining. The best thing to do is resist going back to him. You should only go back to play with him a few minutes after he has stopped whining. 4. Repeat steps 1-3. This time, add 2-3 more minutes of "waiting" time before you go back and play with your dog again. 5. Give your dog a well deserved treat once he's able to withstand longer periods of "alone" time.
