Smoking affects the skin, hair, teeth, gums, nails, and eyes and can cause changes and often aging smokers' personal appearance. Over time these changes can become permanent.Here are some of the effects:* Teeth- Nicotine and tar stains can discolor the teeth, giving them a yellow or brown tinge. Smoking also leads to bacteria increase in plaque which can cause dental problems such as weakened enamel.* Gums- Gingivitis (gum disease) is common in smokers, which is inflammed or infected gums. This is partly caused by irritation by tobacco smoke, and partly few to increased bacteria and reduced blood supply to the gums.* Hair- As well as adopting the scent of cigarette smoke, research has shown that smoking actually weakens hair causing it to become brittle, can cause hair to turn grey prematurely and also contributes to heir loss in both men and women.* Nails- The nails of smokers can also become brittle and prone to flaking or cracking, as well as becoming discolored with nicotine staining. The fingers may also become stained with tar and nicotine.* Skin- Due to Carbon Monoxide in the blood, there is reduced Oxygen in the bloodstream, causing sluggish circulation, and poor nourishment for skin cells. Oxygen is needed by the skin, to eliminate the build up of wastes in the cellular spaces of tissues. Skin becomes dry, which can cause wrinkling, especially around the mouth and neck, where skin is in contact with smoke. Acne may develop as the skin tries to get rid of the toxic chemicals through the pores. The skin may look dull in colour, because of a lack of Oxygen.* Eyes- Nicotine and tar can even stain the whites of the eyes, causing them to look yellow, cloudy and dull. As well as staining, there is a tendency to screw the eyes when smoking, which can also lead to more wrinkles around the eyes and have an aging effect.If you want to look great, smell great and feel great to yourself and others, stop smoking and feel the immediate rewards! You will not only be rewarding yourself, but stopping smoking will make you more attractive to others, and your non-smoking friends and relatives will thank you too!
