Storage Boxes for Your Heirlooms

Up in your loft there are probably a few boxes of family heirlooms that have been passed down from grandparents and parents

. Opening one of the boxes reveals old family photographs, maybe a handful of newspaper clippings, and even a flag used at the funeral of a war hero. Unfortunately, the items are fading and discolouring. What can you do before your family history fades into oblivion?

Family heirlooms made of paper or fabric have three enemies: moisture, light, and circulating air. All three things work to break down the ink molecules, paper fibres, and fabric threads, leading to yellowing and drying. Thankfully, while you can't stop the degradation completely, you can slow it down to a crawl with plastic storage boxes specifically designed to protect your things for an extended period of time.

These types of storage boxes are much better than cardboard boxes because they keep the elements out. Lids which clasp tightly to the top of the box prevent any moisture from entering, unlike a cardboard box which doesn't seal air-tight. Provided you don't throw the container in the river, it will keep out everything from the dampness of a cellar to dripping water from a leaky roof. And that same clasping feature also prevents circulating air from reaching your valuables.

Where light is concerned, a transparent or translucent storage box still lets enough in to be damaging over time. You're better off looking for containers that are dark coloured and opaque, such as grey, green, or black. If you can't find them lining the inside of a translucent box with black construction paper will block out most of the light. And with all three elements kept away from your precious family heirlooms, they'll be around for your grandchildren to enjoy long after you've gone.
