So, how do you actually store the tires that you use during the winter?

The first step is to make sure that you have some decent tire covers. These go over the tires and help to protect them from accidental punctures and general wear and tear while being stored. This is very important when it comes to winter tires as they are not the cheapest things to buy. It is worth shopping around for the best tire covers and not just to look for the cheapest prices.

When you have the covers, you will need to make sure that you buy enough for each tire separately. They cannot be stored in the same bag. After that, make sure that the seals are completely done up to protect the tires completely.

The tires will need to be stored somewhere cool and dry. Heat will affect the rubber, causing it to expand and will make the winter tires less efficient when it comes to putting them on your vehicle the next winter. A garage or the basement are generally good options when it comes to storing your tires for winter use, but you do need to make sure that there are no damp problems. Another option is to use sheds that are waterproof but you will then need to look into whether the temperature can be regulated; unfortunately, these places can end up getting extremely hot in the summer!

If you have nowhere at home to store your tires, you could look at a storage center. There are a number of places that will offer cool, dry, inside storage for a reasonable price. You may also find a tire dealer that offers the ability to store your tires for you. This will cost a little extra but you know that the area will be sufficient and the tires will be kept in a good condition.

Store your winter tires so that they are stacked up on top of each other. You should never put more than four tires on top of each other as this means that the tower is unstable. The towers tend to topple over, which is not only dangerous for the rest of the items around the tires but also means that the tires are not as efficient the next winter.

Tires will lose pressure, even when they are not in use, and you will need to look at this when it comes to using your winter tires again. Make sure that the pressures are checked well in advance before the start of winter so that you can get them to a garage and pump them up if necessary.
