Strategies For overcoming Shyness and Social Anxiety
Strategies For overcoming Shyness and Social Anxiety
Shyness and social anxiety differ and yet are similar. For example shyness is most likely to happen during unknown situations, but in very bad cases it may stop a person functioning properly in his/her familiar situations and relations as well. The undeniable fact is shy people tend to avoid the objects of their dread in order to keep them from feeling uncomfortable and incompetent. Avoiding eye contact and turning bright red when in contact with people is usually a definite sign of shyness - especially in teenage boys. Sometimes shyness may go away as you get older, i.e. say you are shy as a child towards strangers this may eventually fade as you become an adolescent, usually aged 13, because you have gained better social skills.
The fact is man is a complex animal and we all experience shyness at different levels and in different areas. An example of this is that an actor may be raucous and confident on stage, but timid in an interview. A person may be sociable with friends and family, but shy with someone of the opposite sex because he/she may find them attractive. For example in the Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho when Norman Bates first meets Marion Crane he feels a sexual attraction to her which triggers a guilt feeling because he believes he is being disloyal to his mother. His initial shyness comes about because his possessive mother thinks all women are dirty and a boy's best friend is his mother. In fact his mother had created a shy, pitiful and anti social young man who was unable to cope with the real world.
Social anxiety on the other hand is broader than shyness and is often depression related. A psychological state including the experience of terror, anxiety or worrying about being evaluated by others in social situations to the degree of inducing extreme dread. These people are always thinking of what other people think of them. This thinking process stops many people from doing the things they want to do. For example one of your biggest ambitions may be to be a singer, but are too scared to sing in front of your singing tutor. If you can't sing in front of your tutor then you will never be able to sing on stage or in a TV studio. So your ambition to be a successful singer will never happen all because you care about what people think about you.
If you follow these strategies in overcoming shyness and social anxiety you will become a more confident and happy person with yourself:
1. Change your thinking patterns
This means to re-examine the way you think. If you suffer from shyness or social anxiety you are always constantly thinking about what others think about you. When you change your negative thinking patterns you will automatically think differently about yourself and others.
2. Do things differently
Fear stops you doing the things you want to because you believe if you keep safe you will not be hurt by anyone. It is better if you start to take risks. It may be scary at first, but in the long run you will be proud of yourself for taking the plunge. If you keep doing the same things in your life you will always get the same results. This means if you constantly have negative thoughts - too scared to achieve your ambition because you are in constant fear of people - you will never achieve your ambition.
3. Become less self-conscious
When you suffer from shyness and social anxiety you are constantly focusing on the negative accept of your personality. Instead focus on other peoples behaviour. Try and understand why they do the things they do. By focusing on others your self-conscious behaviour will gradually lessen.
4. Build up your self-confidence
The key to overcoming shyness and social anxiety is to build up your self-confidence by being aware of all the above mentioned strategies. It may take you a long time in becoming the person with the guts to go out there and achieve his/her goals, but if you do not attempt to build up your self-confidence now you will never achieve anything in your life.
So don't waste anytime get out there and overcome your shyness and social anxiety now!
