Stress affects us all in different ways. Small amounts of stress can have positive effects on a person. It stimulates the responses of the body and brain. Excessive stress can cause actual damage to the body's physical and mental capacities. Long term stress can exacerbate depression, cardiac and other health conditions. No one can escape stress, so the best thing to do is learn as many tools for handling stress as possible.
Ways to manage stress have become a multi-million dollar business. There are some terrific ideas and suggestions in the market place for managing stress. There are straightforward, everyday things that can change a person's responses to stress. When attempting to make a change in life, small ones work best.
Some ways to manage stress on a daily basis include:
I. Stay Healthy - too much stress causes physical manifestations such as increased heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rates. These changes in the body's vital signs put an increased workload on other parts of the body. Being healthy also improves a person's sense of self-worth and well-being. All of these things work together to create positive energy.
II. Think Positively - it actually does not take much more effort to think positively than it does negatively. Being positive draws people to the positive person, increasing their social circle and support system. Positive energy influences positive responses too. While no one can be happy all the time, the more days a person has being positive the greater the health benefits.
III. Build Self Esteem - Exercise is a crucial part of building positive energy, health and self-esteem. It does not mean the person has to become the next body builder. A simple routine of stretches and calisthenics done in the home three times a week will work wonders. Endorphins are released during exercise promoting a positive self-esteem and well-being. Exercise also helps to build a stronger body, which also helps minimize the effects of stress on the body.
All of these strategies help a person feel better, stronger, and emotionally fit. Having this positive energy allows a person to handle the stressful situations better. They have less physical response to minor stressors. They also feel more prepared to handle stressors. Attending even one stress management course can provide people with the basics they need to at least decrease response to small stressors. The more layers of skills that a person has to combat stress the better off they are. One key element to any class should be conflict management. Even small conflicts inflict stress on the body.
The downside of all these basic stress management strategies is that none of them teach how to respond to a specific situation. While some more extensive stress management classes will tech participants strategies for managing some situations, no one will ever be always prepared. Success in dealing with minor stressors will improve a person's confidence in dealing with more involved situations and stress. However, everyone has to start somewhere.
