Stress and the many simple ways in which we can help manage it
Stress is the bodys reaction to a change that requires a physical, mental or emotional adjustment or response. It can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel angry, anxious, nervous or frustrated. When your stress response is triggered a series of changes occur within our body such as high blood pressure, quickening of the pulse, tightened muscles etc. The stress response is the bodys way of protecting us. It also helps us rise to meet challenges by sharpening our senses. In emergency situations stress can save your life giving you extra strength and keeping you alert.
A stress free life is perhaps, a mirage. The pressures of modern living ensure that stress is always lurking around with us. Wether in the case of an exam, or running a buisness. Even house keeping is not a stress free job as we think it to be. It seems that there is no two ways about it. There will never be enough hours in the day to get all your work done, and your family and career resposibilities see no end, but the simple realization that you are in control of your life is the foundation of stress management. Managing your stress is about taking charge of your emotions, your schedule and your environment. Most importantly the way you deal with things. Your coping statergies either add to the problem, or are a healthy way to manage stress. All healthy ways to manage and cope with stress require change. You can either change the situation or change your reaction. When deciding which option to choose, it's helpful to think of the four A's: avoid, accept, alter or adapt. Since evryone has a unique way of handling things, there is no "one size fits all" solution to go about. No single method works for everyone but there are many basic things that are sure to help.
Avoid people who stress you out
Express your feelings instead of bottling them up
Look at the bigger picture
Be willing to compramise
Manage your time better
Be more assertive.
Take time out for yourself
There are a lot more things that we have to learn and change. Remember not any one of us is perfect. Not evryone forgives and not everyone accepts.
Beyond a take-charge approach and a positive attitude, you can reduce stress in your life by nurturing yourself. If you regularly make time for fun and relaxation, you'll be in a better place to handle life's stressors when they come. Nurturing yourself is a necessity, not a luxury. So make time for leisure activities that you enjoy, and spend time with positive people who enhance your life. The act of laughing helps your body fight stress in a number of ways. Don't forget, looking after yourself is the key. So eat healthy, exercise and don't compromise on your sleep. Feling tierd will only increase stress levels by making you think irrationally.
