Stressful Socialising
The internet, it is frequently said, has transformed how we live our lives and above all the way that we socialise. In just a few short years, companies like Facebook have gone from being a niche medium to being one of the primary internet organisations in the world.
In fact, just last week Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, a multi-billionaire and the subject in an Oscar nominated movie (at no more than the age of 27) even had the privilege of tea with the President of the United States. Social networking is massive business.
Even to the extent that the internet is becoming the focus of academic investigation. A high profile research project last year investigated how people represent themselves through their Facebook profile photos, whilst an altogether different project has just reported on the stress involved with social networking.
According to professors from Edinburgh Napier University one of the principle sources of tension regarding social networking is to do with friend requests. More than one in ten participants stated they felt stress when replying to friend requests with three out of ten of those questioned reporting they experienced guilt when ignoring them.
A different detail of the research discovered that Facebook users also experience stress about withdrawing from Facebook because they might miss out on some pressing news or social function, regardless of the fact they don't really relish being part of the social networking site.
It must be said, a factor that the report didn't consider was the magnitude of people's nervousness or other stress-related reactions, but it seems unlikely that these feelings made a sizeable impact on their lives.
Without doubt, social networking has revolutionised socialising and there's no question that Facebook will be part of social life for years to come. Social networking has become part of how we live, and a whole eco-system has grown around it.
And to join one of the apparent 600 million users of the enormous social networking site, all you need is a stable internrt broadband connection from companies like Sky and an email address, and the rest will look after itself.
