Stretching Prepares You For Tough Exercises in the Gym

Stretching Prepares You For Tough Exercises in the Gym

What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning after a night's sleep? Yawn and stretch yourself.

Stretching is a natural movement that prepares your muscles for action; Try walking as soon as you rise! Your legs will feel groggy! Yes, your legs muscles have not yet shrugged themselves out of the inactive form to a state of dynamic action.

The brain may signal the body to move, but if the muscles are not ready, you will not be able to act coherently. And despite this state, if you force yourself, you can end up with a sprain.

The story is same when you go to gym. You will soon start heavy exercises, but your muscles may not be ready for that. It is not surprising that you are asked to warm up' before dynamic exercises.

Stretches are very effective way of doing this. Not only do they raise the temperature of the body to the required level for exercises, they also gradually create turgidity in the muscles, which will prepare them for action by the time you finish your stretches.

Stretches?

We have already seen an effective example of stretching yourself when you get up in the morning. You will have also noticed that you feel like stretching when you have been sitting in one position for a long time. The action teases and awakens your muscles, so to speak.

These two examples reflect transition of the muscles from a static condition to the dynamic state. The same applies when you go to gym. Stretches before starting your dynamic exercises with heavier load will build enough strength in your muscles to withstand the oncoming workout.

Want to Know How Stretches Are Helpful?

Your muscles take up the form of the individual muscle fibers as a result of stretches. The muscle fibers build tension into themselves which is reflected in the muscles.

Stretching will gradually increase your oxygen intake. You will not be short of breath as you move into more vigorous exercises.

Stretches to Preclude Muscular Strains

Safeguarding the muscles against a possible injury is the job of certain nerve endings in the muscle fibers. These nerves, referred to as muscle spindles, can sense the change in physical state of the muscle fibers.

When you move all of a sudden, your muscles are goaded into quick action. At this time, the spindles flash a message to the brain about sudden change in the state of the muscle fibers. The brain will automatically signal you to slow down to give time to the muscles to respond effectively.

If ignored, the muscles may face an injury in the form of a sprain. Heavier changes without "warming up" can afflict harsher injuries.

Stretches will prepare your body for a tough but safer workout.

Examples of Stretches

You are preparing for dynamic training session, hence perform dynamic stretches such as:

Squats exercises the hip, butt muscles in the legs. Use dumbbells or barbells or a gym ball for performing squats.

Lunges are effective for tuning leg muscles. Here too, exercise with dumbbells, barbells or a gym ball for more effect.

A very effective stretching exercise without using any equipment is the scorpion exercise. It flexes almost all the muscles in the body
