Are you gripping the club too hard?

Most golfers claiming their swing needs to be corrected are overlooking a larger problem, Grip Pressure.

The excessive amount of pressure used to grip the club can actually be the source of errant shots.

So how do you solve this problem?

First, let's understand the effect of over-gripping.

Over-gripping is putting too much pressure on the golf club, causing muscle stiffness. A strong grip will cause your biceps and forearms to stiffen, making you less relaxed. If one muscle is too tight, it will have an immediate effect on your swing.

How To Solve The Problem:

There are a few ways to reduce your grip pressure on the golf club.

1) Practice taking shots with different grip pressures. First, start with a firm grip and continue to loosen up. You will soon find the pressure that is necessary to create better contact. For righties, a tight grip will impose a hook, while a loose grip will impose a slice. Find the grip that's about a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale.

2) There are a number of grip enhancers on the market to reduce over-gripping. With a small application to the glove, you will notice a tremendous increase in distance and control. Many golfers prefer not to use a glove. Grip enhancers can take the place of a glove.

Personally, I use a product called Quick Grip. This grip enhancer is Non-Sticky and lasts all season. I do not have a problem with over-gripping, but still use a grip enhancer for added accuracy.

3) Over-sized grips can reduce over-gripping. Over-sized grips can take a while to get used to, but will take strokes off your game. If your hands are smaller in size, over-sized grips will be difficult to become accustomed to.

Try all these methods to see which works best for you. If you are having trouble finding your grip pressure, turn to a grip enhancer. Grip enhancers will reduce moisture and allow you to achieve a better grip on the club. If grip enhancers are not for you, try over-sized grips. These grips will relieve some pressure and prevent over-gripping.

For over-sized grips, I recommend Golf Pride Tour Velvet Jumbo's. They are fairly inexpensive and deliver results. This all rubber grip is great for any golfer. For a softer feel, I recommend Winn DSI V17. Grip enhancers seem to work extremely well with Winn grips. This could be a deadly combination against your opponent.
