, as the country recovers from the global economic crisis that we have seen in recent months. Almost everyone around the world has been affected in one way or another, with millions of people in the UK affected directly by the rising cost of petrol.

If you're one of these people and are finding it a struggle to run your motorcycle, this list of 6 tips should help you to save money in various different ways. They may not accrue too much individually, but together they can save you thousands of pounds each year.

1. Save money on your vehicle tax by riding a motorcycle that has a 150cc engine or smaller. Paying only 15 pounds for the whole year, the cost more than doubles to 33 pounds a year as soon as you ride a motorcycle with an engine bigger than 150cc (but smaller than 400cc).

2. You can reduce the cost of your annual MOT cost by not having a side car attached. The maximum cost for an MOT for a motorcycle with a side car is 37.80 pounds, whilst without one it drops to 29.65 pounds.

3. It's possible to not pay any costs towards an MOT for three years, but these three years are from the date the motorcycle was first registered. Therefore, although you may be able to save almost 90 pounds, you should factor in the increased cost of a brand new model.

4. If you're reading this and you actually ride a tricycle or a quad, change to a motorcycle. The MOT cost for a tricycle with less than 450kg of unladen weight is 37.80 pounds and for a quad it is the same as a car, 54.85 pounds (this cost also applies to a tricycle that has over 450kg of unladen weight).

5. By being the safest and considerate rider that you can be, you will see a distinct decrease in your motorcycle insurance premium compared to if you weren't safe and were inconsiderate to other road users. Whilst anyone can say that they are a safe and sensible rider, motorcycle insurance companies gauge this by how many penalty points you have on your license.

For example, if you had 3 penalty points, the most common reason for this is speeding, which is often accompanied by at least a 60 pounds fine. Therefore, if this shows up when checked by the insurer, they will take it that you have not taken enough due care and attention when on the road and will increase your premiums accordingly.

6. Another way to save on your motorcycle insurance is to be as security conscious as you can be. Always lock your vehicle away in a secure storage area, such as a garage or shed, when it isn't in use (where possible) and never leave the keys in the ignition. It may seem common sense for some, but other riders who do this are likely to be unaware of just how easy it is for a motorcycle to be stolen and what the effects are on their insurance premium.
