Students Introduced To The Field Of Crime As They Pursue Criminal Justice Degrees

For those who are interested in enforcing the law or handling the many issues that arise within a community due to the effects of extremely aggressive law enforcement or the lack of law enforcement, then the course known as Introduction to Criminal Justice could be an excellent class to take.

It's important with any college course that pre-requisites are handled first. These are usually introductory courses and Criminal Justice 101 is no different. Students are exposed to roughly five different areas of the course and in these areas students can begin to map out a collegiate avenue to arriving at a career working in the criminal justice system.

The first part of the Intro to Criminal Justice course is to learn about how crime functions. Students will learn about the variety of criminal classifications, as well as learn about some of the causes of crime. This part of the course also emphasizes the basic functions of each part of the system that addresses crime, while using the later class time to develop a deeper understanding of each function.

The next stage of this introductory course is to explore the different types of policing and the theories in police work. There is the history of police work and management of resources, as well as the legalities that police officers must understand in order to effectively handle their responsibility as the first line of protection of the public.

Following police work, students are then exposed in-depth to the court systems. This legal maze is defined by the variety of functions that occur in a courtroom. Students get a chance to explore how a case makes its way through the system, from arraignment to sentencing, as well as how the jury system is supposed to function.

After students gain knowledge in the function of the court system, they get to explore the harshest part of the justice system: corrections. The removal from society of a person is the last resort for anyone who is in law enforcement, but it is a necessary evil. Students learn about the differences in the level of jails, as well as gain the skill to distinguish probation from parole.

After learning about the jailing systems, the last part of this introductory class is exploring the controversial issues rearing their heads in American society. Some of these issues include juvenile crimes, as well as how to handle the drug crimes that continuously plague our society and contribute to the seeming rise in criminal behavior.

If a student wants to be a corrections officer, a lawyer, a police officer or even a counselor, the introduction to criminal justice course is an excellent survey of the current system of justice in the United States. Students benefit from being able to learn about the issues within the justice system as they pursue what will be for many of them their criminal justice degrees. They'll find scholarships and grants can be plentiful as new recruits in this field are always needed.
