Students Unions: Understanding Duties And Responsibilities

The assessment of the role of student unions in the life of a society can be performed through analyzing the most prominent actions of such unions

. The protests organized by students in France in 2006 against First Employment Contract, a new form of regulation pushed by the government, which subsequently was modified, demonstrates that unions do have power. The power of unions can be shown through the perspective of the legislative branch of the government. This branch is concerned with forming the legislative basis of the government, where representatives, elected by the population, combine their efforts to write laws. In that regard, this article will provide a brief analysis of the meaning of student unions, in the context of the principles of representation.

Duties

The duties of students unions revolve around representation. Whether the results of such representation lead to amending laws or simple representation of students before commissions, the principles remain the same. Such principle implies that a few shall represent many. Accordingly, those few should be elected by those whom they should represent. There are several options for representation in student unions, all of which are targeted towards the benefits of students rather than the union.

Framework

The main framework of student unions work can be seen through the way representatives are selected. Election is one of the basic elements of democracy which found its place in students unions as well. Accordingly, for the system of students unions to work perfectly, such foundation as election should work perfectly as well. The emphasis on election makes sure that students are represented only by those who they elected by themselves, comparing their actions, personalities, and programs. Accordingly, when a union demands a certain action, either on local or national scale, such demands are supported by the thousands of people who participate in the unions and elect their leaders.
