Studio International Film Service And Programs
JR Bray Studios and Bray Productions was an animation film studio company founded in 1913 by John Randolph Bray
. The studio is known for its many short films in black and white with Farmer Al Falfas series, Out of the Inkwell, and Dinky Doodle Krazy Kat.
The studio has also been designated more or less randomly (according to the distribution contracts and series) under the name Paramount-Bray Pictographs (1917-1919), Goldwyn-Bray Pictographs (1919-1920), Bray Romances (1925) Sunkist Comedy (1926-1927), Culture Fistical Comedy (1927), Skylark Comedy McDougall Alley Comedy Comedy and Whirlwind. A new production studio is dated 1937.
In 1916, the brothers Dave and Max Fleischer joined the studio, adding the series Out of the Inkwell at the port-folio. This change is accompanied by a new distributor, Paramount in 1916. Before the end of 1916, Paul Terry goes, preserves the rights of Farmer Al Falfas and founded his own studio, Paul Terry Productions 1917 (a second will be called Terrytoons in 1927). Bray develops his studio with a view of having four teams working in parallel to produce a short film each week.
The average production is of one month, spreading over four weeks achieves this rate of production. The teams split the production and one for the Colonel Heeze Liar, one for Bobby Bumps, sets off for mainly related to current events, overseen by JD Leventhal, and the last for the rest. Bray also decided to support production of semi-independent as the series serious Silhouette Fantasies of C. Allen Gilbert of classic tales, produced by the studio Bray-Gilbert Film Productions. Towards the end of 1916 and middle of the First World War, Bray assigns teams of filmmakers Leventhal and Max Fleischer shorts on training and training for the Army of the United States.
In 1917, he bought the studio reports distributor to produce his own, moving the editorial line in the field of short films shot real. The work for the army after the war becomes a problem, Bray swamped by the demands of government and big business.
In 1919, the studio contestant International Film Service (IFS) is closing its doors, but owner William Randolph Hearst asked Bray to continue production of the series under license. The studio changed its name to Bray Pictures Corporation in favor of a change of distributor, from Paramount Pictures Goldwyn.
In January 1920, while expenditures exceed the revenues from the studio, Samuel Goldwyn decided to invest in the studio, taking a controlling interest and demand a reorganization. Goldwin wants duplicate the studio Goldwyn Picture Corporation, with two cartoons per week.
In 1921, Max Fleischer decided to leave, taking with him the series Out of the Inkwell (last credit in June 1921). Earl Hurd also left the studio in fall 1921 (last credit in September) and founded his own, Earl Hurd Cartoons from the following year. Following the influx of products from IFS and the many departures, the system of four teams in 1920 and broke no fewer than ten series are in production simultaneously.
Before the end of the first half of 1920, the studio changed direction, entertainment gave way to the production of educational films or institutional. Rowland Rogers was appointed director for educational films and Jamison "Jam" Handy supports Brayco subsidiary, based in Chicago and Detroit, producing training films for the automotive industries. The production also changes with three reels of magazines and newsreels. In 1926, Bray tries to convert to production of a series with actors, copying a series of Hal Roach as The Alley Kids McDougall but it does not attract the public. In 1928, Bray has stopped production and closed the subsidiary created for this type of movie.
But the departures continue. Vernon Stallings left the studio before the fall of 1924, after a period of absence joined the Van Beuren Studios in 1930 and Walt Disney Pictures around 1938. Walter Lantz left the studio in summer 1927 to join the Robert Winkler production in 1928 and founded his studio in 1929. Burton Gillett joined the Disney Studios in 1929 and in 1935 those of Van Beuren. Clyde Geronimi, Disney also share in 1931 while Shamus Culhane did likewise in 1935.
