Styling That's All Your Own At Your Local Salon

The latest fashion magazines ask some very bizarre things of us: they want us to keep up with the changing trends while urging us to be unique

. This isn't easy--in fact, it's precisely why I gave up on magazines altogether... well, maybe not, but for the most part.

I have instead chosen to focus on my individual style. After all, I don't have a team of stylists tweaking every strand into place for my close-up. The same applies to you (unless you are, of course, lucky enough to have a team of stylists), so you should focus on a look that's all your own. But how to find it?

This is the one reason why I haven't discarded all of my glossy magazines: many of them do contain pages upon pages of cute cuts, especially when the seasons are changing. Now, you don't want to imitate any of them to the tee, but you can begin your personal style folder.

What is that, you ask? Well, a style folder is there for your reference. Fill it with your photos of your favorite coifs, including cuts and styles at virtually any length. Also store ideas for bold and beautiful color.

You might wonder why you would store ideas for hair lengths other than your own. I speak as a person that love to experiment with style, so I know that if I ever wanted to hack all my hair off, I have suggestions just waiting for me in my file.

If I want to continue growing my hair longer but want to add some oomph to my appearance, I don't have to sit and scratch my head before I come up with something. It will all be right there.

Now, one of the major keys to crafting a fashion that is all your own is to develop a positive relationship with your salon. That's right--your salon, not just your stylist. There will be days when you need a special service, and your stylist is on vacation or sick. There will be services you need that your stylist is not well versed in, so they will refer you to someone else.

Knowing the techniques and products your salon uses will help you understand what approach is best for your hair type. Developing a great rapport with your stylist is also crucial, as they will be able to tweak the styles in your file to fit your facial shape or your specific modifications.

Don't be afraid to be bold with your hair. That doesn't mean you should over-process it, but don't back down from risque styles. After all, hair grows back!
