One of the most remarkable physical achievements of its time took place on Newmarket Heath in the early part of the 1800s as the English Fleet prepared to set sail to face Napoleon.

It was fortunate that the departure was delayed because it allowed one potential member of the fleet to complete a task and win a very sizeable bet that had nothing to do with either the sea or his military role as an aide de camp.

The bet revolved around walking a mile every hour for 1000 hours! That means that the walker had to walk in every hour for just short of six weeks. Surely that would not be possible?

Yet he seemed confident. A man of means, he had asked one of his workers in mens caterpillar shoes to try to do something similar back on his estate. This man was strong, and well over six feet tall and achieved the task saying he could have continued for another two weeks. It hardly seemed credible.

Come the day, our man was ready in his fine clothes and mens caterpillar shoes. A course was marked out, half a mile long and flat, half a mile out then return. Gas light was fairly new in these times and it would be used at night to allow our man to walk. His assistants provided all he needed and ensured his safety at night.

In the early stages there were only a few people around, his assistants, his confident opponent, and a few who had backed one party or the other and a few curious spectators.

As the days wore on, our man seemed confident. In the early days he had walked quickly giving him time to finish a mile, catch some sleep and complete back to back miles at the end of an hour and the beginning of the next. At times it was very hot during the day a factor that had not been considered. It was said on one occasion that he seemed almost asleep at the starting post when just over halfway towards the 1000.

Meanwhile the Fleet was waiting at Deal. The enemy would no longer be surprised at the attack so why was the Fleet waiting? No one knows so while the soldiers and sailors exercised our aide to camp walked. The crowds of course had gradually grown over the period of the challenge and in the final stages, the crowds lined the route. The event had been covered in the newspapers so everyone who could read knew of its existence. Even in the later stages few in the media gave him a chance.

Yet come the final hour of the task, our man of average build stood at the starting post, his clothes hanging limply from his frame as he had lost 36lbs during the six weeks. He finished his task well inside the final hour to the cheers of the crowd, a richer man and a tired one.

His recuperation took a few days before the headed off to Deal ready to face Napoleon.
