If you're one of those people who lecture themselves every new year about how they're going to get in shape only to find themselves hitting the treadmill a couple times in January before they burn out, there may still be hope for you. Having been a proud procrastinator of getting fit for many years myself, I know how hard it can be to set time aside to slave away on a treadmill and be judged at your local 24 hour fitness. It wasn't until one day, however, that I had an epiphany: it wasn't how often I was exercising that I needed to rethink, but how I was exercising to begin with. The main inhibiting factor in making a routine out of visiting the gym is anxiety (even though "being too busy" is what we'd all like to think). By seeking out alternative methods of exercise that are more in tune with the things that we actually want to do, it's no surprise that we have an easier time making a routine out of them. Just like how some of us never did well in high school because of its jailhouse atmosphere but suddenly became academic butterflies in college, exercising works in a similar way.
Now here comes the fun part: finding which exercise you want to do. Assuming that by getting "fit," we're talking about reducing our body fat % and gaining a more toned appearance, there are several options that seem to work the best these days. The first is yoga. The increased flexibility and breathing techniques that yoga offers (not to mention the wonders it does for your core strength) can do wonders for your physique as well as your state of mind. Bikram yoga, which utilizes a sauna-esque room, increases your metabolic rate to burn fat quicker, while also increasing muscle stimulation and reducing the risk of hyper-extension (giving you fewer excuses to stop showing up).
If stretching half naked doesn't sound like something you could see yourself doing on a regular basis, there's also cardio kickboxing. For the guys out there who want something slightly more macho (keyword here is slightly), kicking and punching with heavy 16 oz. gloves may work (albeit against a heavy bag versus a person hitting you back). Also, if you find yourself to be a little lacking in the self motivation department, an ever present instructor will be there to motivate/scream at you if they ever feel you might be cheapening your workout.
Lastly, if you're one of those people that can only put "fun" and "exercise" in the same sentence if a little friendly competition is involved, there's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Assuming you were never a big sports buff, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, will take your anaerobic respiration to a whole new level. Also, the fact that its techniques utilize virtually every muscle in your body against an opponent's strength (in addition to his body weight at times) will get you more toned than a grand piano. The warm up sessions alone in most BJJ classes, usually focusing on flexibility and core strength, surpass any other ab workout you can do at home or a gym.
