Succession Planning: Is It Important?

In any organization or company, changes are inevitable and sometimes

, these changes involve the transfer of leadership and responsibilities of key persons in the organization or company. Such changes should never be reasons for any dip in the company's performance. This is why many businesses have standard planned activities, processes, and programs to ensure a smooth transition whenever such changes happen. This is called succession planning.

For many different institutions, it is important to implement succession planning. Below are some of the reasons why:

* It is good to be prepared. For an individual, you will never know what could happen. It could be an illness, death, better opportunities, and many more. In a company that employs numerous individuals, the chances of any of these happening are increased. Although succession planning will not really prepare your company for immediate changes like these, it will provide a good and solid procedure that everyone can follow.

* It can be used for the present. There is no need to wait for changes in leadership for you to use succession planning. It can be good for training other employees of lower ranks and for reviewing the processes and goals of the company.

* It lets you take a look at other levels of employees. Developing a succession plan will allow you to evaluate all your employees and not just those at the top management levels. It will force you to consider the capabilities and responsibilities of your employees from top to bottom.

* It fosters a feeling of being valued. A good succession plan cannot be developed by only one person. It should involve inputs from many people involved in the procedures that will be affected. This allows your employees to voice out their needs and concerns as well, making them feel that they are valued in your company.
