Sudafed pe(Pseudoephedrine) is an agent that helps to relax the blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels lead to stuffy nose. This medication is used for treating nasal congestion and sinus problem. It also treats the tubes that retain the flow of fluid in the ear. Sudafed is an active ingredient that contains pseudoephedrine and it is used for the treatment of common cold. Besides this, this medication may be also used for the treatment that is not mentioned in this medicinal direction.

How should I take this medication?

The dosage of the medication should be used as prescribed by the doctor. Usually this medication is taken for short intervals of time. Do not use excess amount of drug. This medication should be taken as a whole as it is specially designed to release the drug slowly in the body. The liquid form of the Sudafed cold medication should be measured to ensure that you are taking the right amount of medicine. Use dose-measuring devices to take care of it. Do not skip this medication, manage proper timing or schedule for taking this medication regularly. Even if you forget to take it then take it immediately as soon as you remember if there is time for your regular schedule. Keep this medication in favorable temperature away from heat, light and moisture. The patient should go for regular check ups in order to see whether or not the medication is performing well.

What are the possible side effects of using this drug?

Pseudpephedrine (Sudafed) may cause side effects such as increase or decrease of heart-beat rate, severe dizzy feeling, anxiety feeling, restlessness, bruises, bleeding easily, weak or loss of strength, fever or cold, pain of body, flu syndrome and rise of blood pressure. Patient may also experience change of appetite, feeling warm, pricking, redness of skin, sleep disorder and rashes or itchy of skin. This medication may also cause allergic reactions such as like hives, breathlessness, swelling on face, lips, tongue, and throat. It may make the mouth go dry, induce drowsiness and light headedness.

What precautions do I need to follow while using Sudafed?

Patient who is having heart, high blood pressure, diabetes and thyroid disorder should consult the medical specialist as there might be a need of adjustment in the dose or need to perform special test. Patient should not use this medication along with the combination of MAO inhibitor such as Marplan, Nardil, Azilect, Eldepryl, Emsam and Parnate at least for 14 days because using of this medication with MAO inhibitor may cause severe side effect and even it can lead to the death of the person. Make sure you also let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or a lactating mother as this medication can cause harm to the fetus while in the womb and may also get in to the milk of breast.
