Sugar Bowl Tickets - Who Will Play In The Sugar Bowl?
While the Sugar Bowl, due to kick off at the Superdome in New Orleans
, Louisiana on New Year's Day, is still quite far off in the future, the college football season is of course winding down and we must begin to ask ourselves some important questions about who will wind up playing in this popular bowl game. Most football teams have only three or four more regular season games to play, so every outcome is critical from here on out. Who will see their school's name printed on this year's Sugar Bowl tickets? Let's take a look. Make sure you look for some seats online, because they can get you into the game even if it's sold out.
Now we all know that the Sugar Bowl traditionally takes the SEC champion, unless the SEC sends one of their teams to the BCS National Title Game. Judging by the history of the SEC, it's a safe bet to assume that the SEC will indeed send another team to the National Title Game. This year there are several SEC teams in high ranking positions in the BCS rankings. We must take into consideration the possibility that a team like Florida or Alabama will win the conference and skip the Bowl to play in the National Title Game.
Florida - While Florida is the clear No. 1 team in the nation, ranked in the top spot in both the AP and BCS ranking polls, they might just be too good to play in the Sugar Bowl. The Gators are a risky team to pick to get to the Bowl because they might be bound for the BCS Title Game in Pasadena. However, their end-of-season matchup with Alabama could decide everything.
Alabama - Speaking of 'Bama, the Crimson Tide look like the clear favorite to make the Sugar Bowl if current trends hold. And how often does that happen in college football? Alabama is undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the BCS rankings. Of course, as you know they play Florida in the season finale. If they lose that game, you can bet they'll land in the Bowl. Win, and they'll be playing for the BCS title. You heard it here first.
LSU - The Tigers of LSU make an interesting pick here. If there has to be an SEC team in the Bowl, and either the Crimson Tide or the Gators look like they're headed to the National Championship Game, then the LSU Tigers could sneak into the Sugar Bowl. Suppose Florida wins out but Alabama loses at least two of its remaining games while LSU wins out, then the Tigers will play a bowl game in their own backyard.
Non SEC Teams - Teams from outside the SEC are harder to pick when you're talking about the Sugar Bowl. Right now there are several teams with potential. Form the Big East both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh could get picked up to play in the Bowl. Mid major teams like TCU and Boise State also look like solid contenders if they're not picked by the other top tier bowl games.
