Having some boundaries and rules would still give you a sense that you are working on this together. If you find that your partner is not as committed to the rules during the separation then maybe he's doesn't want to get back to you and is not committed to your relationship as before.

3. Coping with the damage.

Not all trial separations would go end in the way you wanted it to. That's why you should approach trial separations in a careful and balanced manner. This is hard especially when confronting an affair and you might think that time away is great for both of you. A damaged relationship is hard to mend and to get into trial separation is quite easy. Why? There is no confrontation so you are not really resolving anything but just running away. This may be appealing for a short term excuse of being away from them but doing so frequently will just avoid you from moving forward.

Going through break up is never easy. That's why many couples would want a trial separation first. It's the better and much more appealing option when facing a couple crisis. But you need time to think this over before getting into it. No matter what kind of temporary break-up this maybe, you still need to consider lots of things.
