It is important that we recognise what we are actually experiencing and why, and look at ways of handling stress to make sure that it does not spiral out of control.

There are many ways of handling stress and not all of them will work for everyone, so dont give up at the first hurdle. The first thing you need to do is identify the cause of your stress. Dont be surprised to find that the trigger was something you would normally consider to be mundane. Stress tends to be made up of layers of emotions and it is these layers that affect our ability to cope as we normally would.

One suggestion for handling stress is to do something completely different from your normal routine that is totally focused on you. This should include an element of relaxation and should also be something that occupies your mind enough to stop you thinking. Things such as having a massage, taking a long walk or having a swim are great for handling stress. As well as occupying your mind these activities wear out the body and allow you to relax and shut off for a period of time.


Sometimes it is difficult to figure out what causes you to feel stress so keeping a journal is a good way to identify the triggers and will help you when you are handling stress.

Another great suggestion for handling stress is: dont allow you to isolate yourself. This is a very common reaction for a lot of people that suffer from stress. Whether from feelings of embarrassment or a simply feeling that no one else can understand; it can be hard to recognise that you need help and make the first move to open up. Talk to a trusted friend or relative. If you feel uncomfortable about exposing your inner most thoughts and feelings to someone you know then talk to your doctor about getting a referral. These people are experts at finding the root causes and helping you to find the best ways for handling stress. Although this may not be an overnight fix, the immediate feelings of relief that you will experience by sharing your feelings with someone really is like have a ten tonne weight removed from your shoulders.

So remember stress is not something to laugh off and will affect every one at some point in their life. Handling stress early on will help you to deal and manage with it before it gets out of control and takes over your life.
