Suggestions For Selecting The Best Humidifier For Your Home
If you are feeling that the air in your home is too dry
, and it is beginning to cause you discomfort, then it might be time to consider acquiring a humidifier for your home. This useful appliance is used to put moisture into the air in your home, thus improving the quality of the air. If the quality of your air is better, the quality of your health and life can improve.
There are several symptoms that dry air might cause for you. These can include sinus headaches, coughing, sneezing, dry and itchy eyes, cracked lips, or dry skin. Some people are affected severely enough that the lining of their throat and nose can be dried out to the point that they suffer a sore throat or nose bleeds. In addition to affecting your body and health, the dry air can also have an impact on wood furniture and accessories by drying them out to the point that they crack or split, much like your lips might. By putting moisture back into the air you can help to alleviate these symptoms and improve your well being, as well as extend the life of your furniture.
While having dry air can be hard on you, there are also risks if the air is too moist. The level of moisture in the air, measured as the humidity, is generally considered optimal when it is between 25% and 55%. Anything above 55% can put you into the danger zone where dust mites, mold and bacteria can grow. Any of these situations can be hazardous to your health.
In order to make a decision for the best solution for your home, you first need to understand your options. In the simplest form, there are two primary considerations when selecting an appliance to generate moisture for your home. The first is whether you want a system that generates a warm mist or one that generates a cool mist. The second consideration is whether you want a system for a single room or for multiple rooms.
A cool mist generating unit that works using the principles of evaporation is the most frequently used type of system. The design is actually quite simple. A filter, known as the wicking filter, is saturated with water and placed inside the unit. A fan blowing air past the filter causes evaporation of the water into the air, thus creating a higher level of humidity in the room. The good thing about this cool mist evaporative unit is that it uses very little electricity to operate, and yet the fan is strong enough that you can cover more than one room with a single unit. However, you pay a price for the power of the fan, in that it can be a noisy unit, which can be distracting in a home environment.
Another common type of unit is one that generates warm mist that is dispersed as steam from the unit. This is generated by heating the water in the unit to the point that it boils, allowing the steam to rise and move through the room. The advantage of a system like this is that it is much quieter due to the fact that there is no fan involved. The fact that the warm steam can make the room feel warmer can be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on what type of climate you live in. The warm mist system uses more power than its counterpart because of the electricity draw of the heating element needed to boil the water. And, while it is much quieter without the fan, this also limits the dispersal of the moisture to a smaller area.
If having a quiet system is your primary objective, then the ultrasonic style might be your best option. This type of system, which can produce either cool or warm mist, works by using high frequency sound waves. These waves cause the mechanism of the system, the diaphragm, to vibrate and break the water down into a fine mist that is released into the air. The advantages of this type of unit are the quiet operation and a low level of power consumption. The disadvantages are that the units generally only work for small rooms, and unless you use distilled water you can end up with impurities being spread into the room via the misting process.
If you have decided that a humidifier is the right solution to improve the quality of the air in your home, and thus the quality of your life, it is then a matter of deciding which type of unit best meets your needs. Now that you know the basics of the types of units, you know that you will need to make a room size coverage decision and a mist temperature decision. Having those two pieces of information will allow you to shop for the right solution for your home and health needs.
