Super Bowl Tickets - Will The Saints Win The Big One?
The Super Bowl is closer than you think, and already there are some favorites emerging
from the pack of NFL teams vying for the chance to bring home the league title. Some of the preseason favorites are dropping out of contention while others are shooting up to the top of the pile from out of nowhere. Which teams have the best shot at bringing home the Lombardi Trophy this season? One place to take the pulse of the future is Las Vegas.
As they say, the house always wins. Well, that's not entirely true. Some Super Bowl upsets have set back bookies in Vegas before, but sport gaming experts do know what they're doing. Taking a look at the current futures odds at Vegas online, we can see that the New Orleans Saints are the team to beat at this point in the season. Other preseason favorites like Indianapolis and New England are in the running, as well, but whose name will appear on the Super Bowl tickets?
While the New Orleans Saints opened up the season with odds somewhere around 18/1 according to most bookies, they're now fetching odds at about 7/2, the best in the league. Where did these Saints come rolling in from? Well, last year the Saints proved that they could put points on the board. Quarterback Drew Brees had one of the best seasons in the history of the NFL. But despite their high-flying passing game and sometimes explosive running attack, the defense was mediocre and the Saints finished 8-8, which was only good for 4th in the tight NFC South.
So not many people were expecting the Saints to start out this hot. As of the 5th of November, the Saints are a perfect 7-0, and they've already played the hard part of their schedule. They're averaging 39 points per game, by far the best in the league, and as you can expect Drew Brees is one of the main reasons why. Brees is leading the league in passing completions and passing touchdowns. And the running game is doing its share-fourth in the league in total rushing yards. But a team that relies too much on one dynamic QB could have a quick fall back to Earth if he somehow goes down with an injury. Are you willing to bet on Brees' arm? A lot of people say "Yes!"
The same questions about defense remain this year, although with the way the Saints are putting up points the defense only has to be mediocre to get all the way to the Super Bowl. Still, the common wisdom in sports says that offenses win games and defenses win championships. Does this team posses a championship-caliber defense? Right now the Saints are ranked No. 15 in the league in passing yards allowed and No. 11 in the league in rushing yards allowed. Of course, we're not sure that these numbers are all that accurate of a description of the Saints defense. Typically the Saints get up on their opponents big time before the second half, and the other team feels obligated to air it out. This might explain why the Saints take on the most passing attempts as a defense.
