Supplemental Security Income by:Evan Langsted
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplementary program to assist aged
, blind and disabled citizens who have little or no income. Supplemental Security Income provides funds to meet the basic needs for food, clothing and shelter. Monthly SSI benefits are paid to the disabled, blind, those 65 years of age or older and children as well who qualify for SSI benefits.
Even though Supplemental Security Income benefits are administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA), the benefits are not based on prior work or a family member's prior work record. No current or previous employment is required to qualify for SSI benefits.
Supplemental Security Income recipients can also have their benefits supplemented by Medicaid to help pay medical expenses such as doctor bills, prescription costs and other health care costs. SSI beneficiaries are also eligible for food stamps.
