Caustic soda or sodium hydroxide is prepared by the reaction of sodium carbonate (known as soda) in concentrated solution form with calcium hydroxide (slaked lime). It provides the functions of neutralization of acids, condensation, hydrolysis and saponifications. It act like a significant raw material in the manufacture of polycarbonate, super absorbent polymer, zeolites, epoxy resins, sodium phosphates, sodium sulfite and a large number of sodium salts. Sodium hydroxide has strong absorption properties in room temperature. It can react with metal tin and zinc to produce zinc acid sodium and sodium stannate. Moreover it is also being used experimentally in a new technology to create synthetic petrol.

Caustic soda is highly reactive and corrosive chemical substance so it can be handled by professional chemical users and can be irritating to your skin and eyes. So while dealing with this chemical one should wear gloves and uniform to cover himself. In case it is sprayed in eyes, it is good to wash your eyes with water immediately foe ten to fifteen minutes and take hospitality care.
