Supported Living - The Right Career Path For You?

No matter whether working in supported living for learning disabilities

, mental health problems or physical disabilities; a career in supported living is diversified and rewarding.

But this does not mean it suits everybody. What follows is an exploration of the attributes that you should ideally have should you wish to pursue this vocation. If you are able to say this is me to every one; maybe this career path is worth looking into further.

Caring by nature - it must go without saying that you must be an extremely caring individual who without thinking puts others before him or her to be able to be employed in supported living. Nonetheless, its also important for you to detach yourself from a scenario emotionally should the need arise.

A natural need to listen to and get to know people - generally you will work on a long-term base with particular people making it crucial that you establish a trusting relationship with each individual and uncover their likes, dislikes and character traits.

Flexibility - as the needs of those you work with change, you will need to adapt appropriately. You might also work with difficult individuals who might act quite differently every time you visit them - you should be able to adapt to their feelings; e.g. a structured activity might need to be modified.

Creative nature - individuals using supported living for learning disabilities might wish to live by a rigid routine, whilst others may wish to live spontaneously. The ability to think of many different activities for adults with learning disabilities is extremely advantageous.

Life experience - now and again this type of work can land you in tough situations or put you head to head with individuals that have awful tales to tell of their past. A client could even confide in you information of a very sensitive nature. It is very important that these situations are addressed properly; making life experience very valuable.

Exceptional communication - not every person you work together with will be easy to speak with. Quite often, clients will be very shy before getting to know their carer. You may even have to handle difficult family members which ask for more of your time than it is possible to give, or who feel some of the care procedures dont meet their expectations.

For these reasons it is important that you are able to correspond proficiently with all kinds of individuals, under pressure and in tricky circumstances.

Hard working - although this may come under every single job description, it's no more accurate than in the care industry. The type of work done is exhausting; both physically and mentally. Long hours are not unusual and the pay is often fairly low.

Those that choose to work in care don't do so for financial remuneration or a hassle-free way of life. If you don't enjoy hard work and the thought of arranging activities for adults with learning disabilities leaves you cold; maybe this line of work is not suitable for you.
