Surefire Ways To Annoy Your Boss
Ideally, the best thing you can do at work is not require much of your supervisor's attention. You don't want to be known as a troublemaker, a slacker, high maintenance, or whatever. It would appear to be a foregone conclusion that showing up on time, putting in your hours, and meeting or exceeding your goals every day should be minimum expectations.
If you do merit your boss' attention, make sure it is for the right reasons, such as them wanting to give you some extra responsibility due to your outstanding track record, or a public pat on the back for a particular job well done. These are all well and good. What you want to avoid, though, are those things that tick the boss off.
One sure way to get under your boss' skin is a lack of enthusiasm. In the current economy and job market, you would think anybody with a job would be profoundly grateful for the chance to keep working. Lackluster response to a project or worse, mediocre results can have serious consequences.
Example, this author works for a company that services the water damage restoration industry, and last year was assigned the task of writing a book that would serve as a one stop shop for all things related to water damage, repair and restoration. Now such an assignment wasn't exactly WAR & PEACE, and I knew it would never put me on the bestseller lists, but hey, I'm a writer and I was being paid to spend my workdays writing a book that would be aggressively pushed and marketed. Seen in that light, it was easy to get enthused over the project.
Your boss can tell when a project has been executed with enthusiasm and passion, and when it was simply phoned in. Always put your best foot forward.
Another guaranteed way to annoy your boss is asking him to make your job easier. True, in your mind you may be seeking more efficient ways of doing things, but it all comes down to approach. It's not the boss' place to make your job easier; you're there to get a job done and sometimes it's just difficult to do. However, if there are perks you want, such as the ability to telecommute, or perhaps an increase in your budget to hire an assistant, or whatever, go into it by asking your boss what YOU can do to make these things happen. Suddenly you don't look like an ungrateful whiner, but rather a valuable employee who is seeking to contribute something of worth with a specific goal in mind. Very impressive.
Another goody.overlooking details. When your boss gives you an assignment, more likely than not, they will give you all the pertinent information, such as the nature of the project, when it is due, detailed information required, etc. Asking about things that have already been addressed sends a clear message, namely that you weren't listening the first time.
In grade school we got bad marks if we weren't able to work and play well with others. This is also true in the workforce. An employee who cannot or will not get along with his or her co-workers will attract the boss' attention, and almost certainly have them thinking about the best way to replace you.
Your company exists to make money, and as a result, the entire reason that you are there is to facilitate that process. When bosses see employees wasting time or resources on things that do not move the company forward, they get cranky. Your agreement is basically to give them all you have for eight hours each day, which is not a lot to ask when you think about it. Any employee that isn't willing to hold up their end of the bargain can expect to be looking for work very soon.
Don't ask questions until you have at least made an effort to find the answers on your own. They say there is no such thing as a stupid question, but if you haven't lifted a finger to help yourself find the answer, it creates the appearance of stupidity in the eyes of your boss.
Next time we will be a bit more upbeat and list the surefire ways to impress your boss. Now go therefore and perform well
