Surgical Technologists Have Many Career Options With The Right Training

The recent troubles in the economic market, global recession and the rise in unemployment

have many people changing their careers or opting to study something completely different. An increasingly popular career is proving to be that of a surgical technologist. The career opportunities are excellent and the prospect of a long-standing position is a very real one.

A technologist is someone who assists surgeons in operating rooms. They work only in assisting fully trained and qualified doctors, surgeons and nurses. They are part of the team responsible for carrying out various operating room procedures, together with anesthesiologists and surgically trained nursing staff. Their role and duties will differ between hospitals and the surgeons they work for.

One of the important roles they carry out as part of their daily duties is the preparation of the operating room, just prior to surgery. Included in this task is the correct selection and placement of utensils and preparation of sterile solutions and sterile drapes. Techs will be responsible and accountable for the sterile condition of all equipment, as well as ensuring it is in full working order before any operation commences.

A technologist will also aid in the preparation of patients and conduct a number of pre-surgical checks and tasks. These will include washing, shaving and disinfecting the location of surgery. They will often also be in charge of transporting the patient from a ward to the operating room. Once there, they will assist in placing the patient on the operating table and with the placement of sterile drapes. Once the patient is ready, a technologist will assist the rest of the operating room team in getting ready. This will include the putting on of gowns and sterile gloves.

This career has excellent long-term prospects for a number of reasons. Perhaps the biggest attraction to the profession is the growing number of jobs available. The number of operations being carried out is growing quickly every year, due to an increasingly old population and technological advances that make more afflictions and injuries operable. Once a position with a hospital has been acquired, technologists usually choose to specialize in a particular area of medicine, such as cardiology or neurosurgery.

For anyone looking for surgical technologist jobs, they must be able to prove they have attended a Surgical Technology Program. The training must have been with an accredited college or institute and certification needs to be provided. Technologists may enroll on either a certificate or degree program and will be reassessed every six years.
