Sustainable Construction in the United Kingdom

For several years, the British government is concerned about sustainable development

, particularly in the Construction industry. Despite its many regulatory initiatives, the results on the ground are still disappointing.

In 1999, the British government published its strategy for sustainable development, in a report entitled: "A better quality of life, a strategy for sustainable development for the UK". This national strategy sets out four key objectives for sustainable development in the United Kingdom:

1- Social progress which recognises the every UK resident

2- Effective protection of the environment

3- Prudent use of natural resources

4- Maintaining levels of economic growth

The policy applies to all sectors of the UK economy but at the time of publishing this strategy, they already admitted that the construction industry had a particularly important role to play in providing the country the ability to achieve its sustainable development goals.

The building, with the reinforcement materials and associated services for buildings and urban infrastructure, creating civil engineering jobs, consumes natural resources and energy, is responsible for certain wastes but affects well-being and productivity at a much larger scale than most other sectors of the economy.

In June 2000, the British government introduced a second policy document "Building a Better quality of life - A strategy for more sustainable construction," which highlights the benefits of economic, social and environmental impacts that may result from efficiency improvements in

Building industry. This document explains how the government wants the construction industry contributes to sustainable development.

The building and construction sector is beginning to admit that the record of its progress and its enforcement are essential steps on the path of sustainable construction. Benchmarking is becoming increasingly common, businesses are more likely to publish reports on sustainable development and the environment, and social and moral responsibility of the construction company is now part of business lifestyle.

The house construction plan for sustainable neighborhoods, developed this year, embodies the intention of the United Kingdom government to create neighborhoods and housing developments offering a high quality of life. Sustainable construction is a key component of this plan.
