Sustainable Water Solutions By Watercan

WaterCan has been working to provide Sustainable Water solutions and programs to developing countries for over 20 years

. Their Clean Water for Schools projects have been able to reach thousands of children in eastern Africa. The program helps to support higher school attendance, and quality education. WaterCan achieves this by working with schools to find locally-appropriate water and sanitation solutions that fit the needs of students and teachers.

Many national governments throughout eastern Africa have been adopting a new policy of free Universal Primary Education [UPE]. This policy has being implemented after recognizing the importance of education as a step to eradicate poverty and poor living conditions. The numbers of children enrolled in primary schools has been growing, which explains the incredible need for WaterCan's Sustainable Clean Water for Schools program. Because clean water, sanitation and hygiene education has been severely overlooked, WaterCan works hard to provide school-age children with an adequate learning environment that constitutes the basic ground for a better future.

By providing Sustainable Water accessibility solutions in primary schools, WaterCan is able to help children live a healthier life; many diseases such as skin and eye infections, intestinal parasites and diarrheal diseases are caused due to the consumption of dirty water. Such health conditions can lead to physical and mental development issues, that can put a strain on learning and education. Clean Water for Schools project have been instituted not only to provide children with access to water, but also to give them proper sanitation facilities and hygiene education.

For WaterCan to have the power to offer these programs throughout East African communities, the input of the Canadian public is of tremendous importance. By organizing fundraisers and stimulating awareness of the public, WaterCan has been able to continuously grow its important clean water programming Fundraising efforts are undertaken in support of WaterCan's projects by Canadians of all walks of life. Canadian students have been particularly enthusiastic about supporting the Clean Water for Schools program as they are directly impacting the lives of their African counterparts. This year, WaterCan is proud to announce that the funds raised by the annual School by School Fundraising Challenge for primary and high school students will be matched 3:1 by the Canadian government. More than 6,000 students throughout Kenya's Bondo District will gain access to clean, safe drinking water.

WaterCan's primary mission is to improve living conditions in poor East African communities by providing Sustainable Water access, sanitation and hygiene education. Moreover, communities are provided with the important tools and skills that help them to maintain the new infrastructure over the long term. One of WaterCan's programming streams, the Clean Water for Schools program, is certainly is an exciting and successful undertaking that's helping to meet the great need of students for cleans, safe drinking water at school. Thanks to the support of generous donors and the hard work of community member's and WaterCan's African partners WaterCan has been able to make a considerable difference in the lives of many individuals.
