The bacteria of cholera are excreted in feces and come in contact with drinking water or water used for washing and cooking

. Eventually, it will infect people. The bacteria can also be spread to food if people do not practice proper hygiene and do not wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet.

Thus after an epidemic in a non-endemic area, there is no revisitation by cholera in the locality for two or three-years. Cholera is a life threatening disease and fluid loss is so rapid that no chances can or should be taken. It is best to take the patient to a hospital for intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

Contrary to popular belief, cholera outbreaks are not the result of rotting dead bodies after natural disasters. According to the CDC dead bodies rarely spread disease or spark epidemics. Other consequences of a disaster, such as disruption of water and sanitation systems or massive displacement of populations to overcrowded camps can increase the risk of illness and suffering. These conditions currently exist in Haiti.

The disease comes in three stages. The first or evacuation stage lasts from three to 12 hours and is characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, cold, bluish skin and acute thirst.

Twenty-four hours later, the second stage begins in which the patient has low body temperature, purple and wrinkled skin, severe cramps, dark or absent urine, low blood pressure and a weak pulse.

Fruit, vegetables and uncooked food washed in contaminated water can cause infection. Shellfish can be infected if it comes from sea where sewage is a problem. Cooked food is safe, but can be contaminated if it has been handled by someone with the bacteria.

Cholera was originally endemic to the Indian subcontinent, with the Ganges River likely serving as a contamination reservoir. The disease spread by trade routes (land and sea) to Russia then to Western Europe, and from Europe to North America. Cholera is now no longer considered a pressing health threat in Europe and North America due to filtering and chlorination of water supplies, but still heavily affects populations in developing countries.

The majority of patients afflicted by cholera can be treated with oral rehydration therapy. Those severely suffering from the illness may need intravenous fluids. Antibiotics can also be used in treatment to reduce the duration and severity of the illness although some strains of V.cholerae have shown increased resistance to antibiotics.

They can be done by oral rehydration solution and if it is an epidemic it cannot be stopped immediately. Although Cholera can be controlled easily, unless you take proper precautions, this condition could escalate into something serious.
