Symptoms Of Ms: What Other Body Parts Get Affected By M S Along With Brain And Spinal Cord

span>Share:Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease which involves the degeneration of the myelin sheath present over the axons of the neurons of brain and spinal cord. The sheath acts as a protective cover of the cells of the nervous system and also helps in the fast conduction of the impulses across the cell. So this is the disorder where myelin sheath gets damaged leading to a battery of signs and symptoms. Since the brain and spinal cord supply the nerves to whole of the body, ms symptoms would include almost all the systems and there would be derangement in them in one way or the other.

For every disease, there are some symptoms which appear early, as soon as the onset of the disease and some of the symptoms appear after some duration, after progression of the disease. In case of Multiple Sclerosis, the early symptoms include the ones which are directly related to the brain and spinal cord. These are loss in the sensation, numbness in the fingertips and toes, occurrence of a tingling sensation and fatigue in the limbs since they have to bear weight of the body. Another common symptom is headache. This would persist for a longer duration. All the symptoms may disappear or they may reappear depending upon the intensity of the disease.

With the advancement of the disease, more symptoms start appearing and the late symptoms of ms include,

Impairment in the thought process and concentration: as there is derangement of the nervous tissue, there is difficulty in the thinking and the patient is unable to concentrate on something for a considerable amount of time. He tends to forget things because the memory also gets affected.

Dizziness: MS also leads to loss of the balance of the patient and he tends to feel dizzy and may fail to remain in standing position for a longer duration. This is often accompanied by severe headache.

Difficulty in Swallowing and Speech: since the muscles of the body are supplied by nerves of central nervous system, the effects can be seen in the muscles which enable swallowing as well as speech. Due to their spasm, the patient may be unable to speak properly and faces difficulty in the ingestion of food as well.

Impaired Senses: all the sense organs have enormous nerve supply and thus any impairment in the nervous system would also affect their working. There is loss of vision or double vision and loss of hearing in the patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. Loss of sensation is also there as the largest sense organ of the body is skin.
