Symptoms of Asthma and Asthma Treatment in Ireland

Asthma in Ireland affects 470,000 people and it can significantly affect quality

of life for both adults and children, often resulting in many days missed from work and school. Asthma symptoms vary but include blocked nose, wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, coughing and/or frequent colds and chest infections.

Before noticing the more recognised signs of asthma, you may notice a number of other symptoms of asthma:

Increased nighttime cough

Tiredness with activities that you normally could complete easily

Worsening allergy symptoms like persistent runny nose, dark circles under your eyes or itchy, inflamed skin

Cough or wheezing with physical activity

Restless sleep or waking up tired

A Russian doctor, Professor Konstantin Buteyko discovered that asthmatics over breathe, that is hyperventilating or taking two or three times more air over what they need. This constricts the airways and causes asthma symptoms. Founder of Asthma Care Ireland, and former chronic asthmatic, Patrick McKeown trained under Professor Buteyko. Along with his own research he devised a course which instructs and guides asthmatics about how to take control of their asthma naturally.

Aviva is offering their health members money back on the Asthmas Care Program with Asthma Care Ireland. Asthma treatment includes an 8 hour course, spread over three weekly sessions. Teaching mainly concerns a unique breathing technique known as the Buteyko Method. Participants are encouraged to learn to breathe through their nose and control the amount of air inhaled, thereby reversing their asthma symptoms. Other instructions include how to stop an asthma attack, the correct diet to follow, sleeping and physical exercise.

With this asthma treatment, up to a 50% reduction in asthma symptoms such as wheezing and coughing may be seen within two weeks. Research into the Buteyko Method in Australia and New Zealand has shown that the need for preventer medication may be reduced by up to 50% and the need for reliever medication may be reduced by up to 90% within three to six months.
