Why Night Sweats Occur In Women More Than Men

If you are woman, congratulations, you are far more likely to suffer from night sweats at some point in your life than a man

. And we largely have our hormones to blame. Sleep hyperhidrosis, the medical term for night sweats, affects almost everyone at some point in their life. But when women pass into menopause they pretty much can't avoid those pesky hot flashes.

Women Suffer Night Sweating Like Everyone Else

All the most common causes of sleep hyperhidrosis apply to women accept, obviously, andropause disorder. So women are not spared when it comes to the sweats incurred from consuming alcohol or spicy foods. And they are not spared when it comes to medication side-effects, such as the excessive perspiration caused by anti-nausea drugs or antipyretic medications (such as Advil).

Additionally, illnesses that catalyze these sticky nights also do not spare women any more than they do not spare men. This includes any sickness which may give someone a high temperature, including any infection. Tuberculosis and high blood pressure are among concerns women must consider if they experience persistent night sweating.

And Women Suffer Night Sweats That Men Are Spared

As a woman's ovaries stops producing estrogen and she passes into menopause, she will experience the most common cause of night sweats: menopause. While some researchers believe many men experience something called andropause, it is neither as clearly defined nor as potent as the menopause women experience.

When our hormones start spiking and fading, our hypothalamus becomes just as confused as we feel. Our hypothalamus is the part of our brain that regulates our sweating and cooling. When it gets confused, it often dramatically raises or drops our body temperatures.

The rapid hormonal changes women undergo during menopause confuse the hypothalamus as much as any medication. This is why hot flashes and related night sweats have become synonymous with menopause. And if that was not enough, women are also significantly more likely to experience rheumatoid arthritis, another common trigger of night sweats.

Thankfully, both rheumatoid arthritis and menopause can be somewhat modulated through hormone replacement therapy. However hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains somewhat controversial and precise implementation for specific individuals arguably remains unclear.

So if you are a woman entering your mid-forties or so, try not to panic if you are experiencing night sweats. While I always encourage people to consult their doctor, in all likelihood, the source of your sleep hyperhidrosis is probably perfectly natural.
