The chief characteristic of this acutely infective viral disease is the unnatural growth of the mononuclear leucocytes of blood. Epstein-Barr virus is responsible for this disease. Such virus is related with the herpes group. The disease is not absolutely infective but when people come in close contact with the infected person the virus infiltrates into the body though nose and mouth. This malady is noted almost in every country of the world. But in the peak period of winter and spring it invades in a massive scale as an epidemic manner.

Actually the incubation period is 4 to 6 weeks. In the very first stage there is headache, slight fever, chill, sore throat and stiff neck are noticed. After that one day the fever comes in a rapid pace, 102 degree to 103 degree. The anterior part of the throat looks red. There is severe pain and inflammation of the tonsils and the pharynx.

The superficial lymphatic glands, especially the glands close to the neck swell. Someone may experience the swelling of the glands of the groin and the armpits. In the initial stage the glands of one side of the body swell. Gradually the other glands of the body are affected and marked enlargement is noted thereafter.

The liver and the spleen seem enlarged. Some may experience mild jaundice. The yellow spot to the eyes and the skin is marked too. The mesenteric glands of the intestines enlarge along with this. As the glands within the body are enlarged paroxysmal cough, chest pain, dyspnea, collapse of the lungs, dysphagia, nausea, pain abdomen and many other painful symptoms are noticed. A peculiar type of fever lasts for consecutive 10 to 15 days. But the swelling of the glands are worthy of mention. Sometimes it is noted that the fever subsides but relapses with a new vigor.

The CNS may be associated sometimes and causes bad symptoms like meningitis or encephalitis as there is sever irritation in the brain or meninges. As a result of these Bell's palsy, spasm, cerebral ataxia etc may be noticed. In some patients macular and popular ashes erupt for the time being and if antibiotics are used such kinds of rashes get the better of the patient.

Petechiae are noticed too in the mouth and around the hard palate. Rarely myocarditis or peicarditis may affect the patient. If it is noted that the patient has been suffering for more than ten days or there is the severe sore throat that hinders the patient to swallow anything never delay. The patient must be minutely examined by a specialist so that the other symptoms of sore throat may be ruled out.

If abdominal pain lasts long proper attention is needed. You may be cautioned of spleen rupture. At this crucial stage never hesitate to call in a doctor too. Emergency medical attention may be required at this stage at the very instance. Again there may be severe headache and rash all over the body of the patient. You may think of meningitis at this stage and seek sharp medical attention to avert serious outcome.
