THE TIME MACHINE BACKUP
Hard drives may have a mean time between failures of 300
,000 hours rating "mean time between failures or MTBF" is the lingo, but failures are more common than you may have considered
If hard drives are supposed to last almost forever, you'd be amazed on how many units are dead on arrival when originally purchased. Is this an oversight in quality control or just the nature of the beast?
It is justly said that like an asteroid, it's not a question of "if" it will hit or crash, but when will it happen, so you better be prepared and preparing implies that you won't lose your priceless data.
Did you know that 6% of all PCs will suffer data loss in any given year; 31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to fortuitous events; 60% of companies will shut down within 6 months of a major data loss; 34% of companies fail to test their tape backups, and 77% have found tape back-up failures.
And the above is just the tip of the iceberg considering that every week 140,000 hard drives crash in the United States as documented by a major player in the backup industry.
Today computers are not luxury items, they constitute the holders of our patrimony be it vital financial information, work files or irreplaceable memories in the form of pictures, video, music etc.
The dilemma now lies on the fact that we depend on computers to save tons of Information we accumulate in our daily life and computers depend on hard drives which on a daily basis are getting huge.
Just the size of the storage hardware can be mind boggling and on its own compounds why everyday users are reluctant to back up there computers.
Some of today's hard drives are rated in "terabytes" (1 terabyte (TB) equals 1000000000000bytes = 10004 or 1012 bytes) not just "megabytes", just think about figuring a way to protect this humongous amount of data.
Ever had a computer let you down, I mean just die on you, not boot or not read your hard drive? I'm sure it has happens to you or mark my words, it will and at that moment you'll feel that void in your stomach, a clammy sweat and utter sense of impending death.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure', so it's vital that you backup your hard drive data on a regular basis with hopefully inexpensive capable software.
If data loss is a fact of life, you better do something about it and that's "backup and backup more".
If you're paranoid like me, this is old hat and you already backup you're data regularly to an external hard drive, but to do so, you'll need trustworthy software to help you out with the process.
Unfortunately, the industry has come up with solutions which are usually or to sophisticated or too simple for power users.
I'm terribly paranoid and that's why I've tried at least a handful of hard drive backup software and after trial and error, I've considered Genie Timeline Home 2.1
(http://www.genie-soft.com) the best alternative on the market.
That's a mouthful, but these are the some of the strong points among others:
Beautiful user interface.
Ease of use.
Powerful features.
Excellent reporting capabilities.
Low or unnoticeable use of system resources.
Plain English prompts.
Trustworthy backups.
Excellent customer support.
Genie Timeline Home 2.1 is not your everyday backup software, it has a unique feature unfound in the competition and that is the ability to monitor your chosen backup files on a continuous basis and it has the "Genie Timeline" restore feature by which through a simple interphase you can literally choose the time and date of a file you wish to restore, "that's like a magic restore".
All the above, plus much, much more gives this vanguard option unprecedented value and functionality not found in the competition.
