Time Management Tips - For Professional Networkers

At the chance of sounding deranged, there are but 2 actual words to define Time Management - Forget IT.

It may appear we are trying to run faster and faster, packing more "activities" into our waking hours (chiefly our working hours), paying minor care to the value of the activities we are attempting to fit in.

In the working arena, people seem to be judged, managed and promoted on the theory of work volume, rather than the effect of their activities; numerous brownie points can be earned by arriving earlier and working later than anyone else in the office.

Now by advancing Time Management is nonsense, as we genuinely cannot control it, we can, still control the items into which we fix our concentration, energy and efforts, and use it to our benefit.

Now for the person who is much more engrossed in results, rather than results by volume, there are 4 factors to keep in mind:

1. Goal Setting.

2. Pareto's 80/20 Rule.

3. To Do List.

4. Elimination.

Goal Setting

By having a definite, well defined direction, we can filter and fix on the shortest way to its achievement. Vague objectives result in hours shuffling irrelevant paperwork, frustration and stress.

Pareto's Principles.

This (ordinarily known as the 80/20 rule) in basic terms recommends that only 20% of our activities (or inputs) are responsible for 80% or our results (or outputs). By definition, we fritter 80% of our time on useless nonsense.

In essence, by identifying the 20% of results generating activities, we can focus our attention much more effectively, work less, and yet raise productivity significantly.

To Do List.

Without doubt this is one of the simplest and most effective tools available.

By using a WRITTEN to do list, necessitates us to concentrate on the relevant and essential tasks.

However, this is a 3 stage approach:

a) Brain storm all the areas needing deliberation (write them down on a piece of paper).

b) Rank in order of importance.

c) Work on the most crucial task until completed- if distracted, attend to the distraction and go back to the task until it is completed. Then, and only then, carry onto the next item on the list.

Elimination.

As influential as it is to focus our attention on the 20%, it is just as valuable to comprehend what is nonessential and eliminate from our life.

In closing, all 4 areas are inter-related and inter-dependent , with the constant primary motive being self-discipline.

If we do not, cannot or will not cultivate self discipline our lives will appear little more than the material totality of our whims, and we will one day awake questioning why we have worked so hard, yet accomplished so little.

One last word, control e-mail, don't let it control you!
