TRUST-- A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND
Trust, from the past has been considered as the powerful lubricant that keeps the economy running
. Trust has been almost the part of every book of business, telling the importance and virtue of trust. Trust is something that is critically important to survive in this world, we develop trust by asking ourselves the diligently right questions. Here strengths and weaknesses of trust, why we trust so readily, why we sometimes trust poorly, and what we can do about it is to be discussed. Lets first discuss why are we so prone to trust? TRUSTING IS HUMAN NATURE
Our brain is made in a way that right from our birth we show signs of trust towards the people around; mother etc. a few hours infant can mimic the mother's expressions. In short we are born to be engage and to engage others, which is what trust actually means.
Scientists how consider the nurturing qualities more to be responsible for the level of trust, the bonds, social ties etc.
Emotions also play a role in trust like mother's trust toward her kid and vice versa.
We are likely to trust those people who are similar to us in some dimension or the other, the greater the similarity the more the trust one has on another. Other studies show that we like to trust people who are members of one social group than the outsider.
Physical touch also contributes to the experience of trust. Many physical games or practices were conducted to study the response and the result showed that a touch has a strong meaning.
This shows that we trust routinely, reflexively even though we don't agree but our actions convey it.
THINGS DO USUALLY GOES WRONG WHEN WE TRUST this is because OUR JUDGEMENT IS POOR SOMETIMES
To trust people on the basis of physical similarities can be proved disastrous when combined with the way we process it. Confirmation bias is when we see what we want to see.
The behaviors of people around us develop our opinions and responses. Most importantly individual's decisions about how much to trust a person or partners were swayed by the social expectations.
Confirmation bias is not bad unless we get out of the social stereotypes we have in our minds. Psychologists call the already present beliefs and stereotype belief in our minds the implicit theories.
Some people just consider their own judgment to be correct and don't care about others.
It's not just about biases, it's sometimes we rely on the 3rd person to check the reliability of other person or group.
The problems or biases described above are the reason to make errors. Our brain on another hand hinders our decisions to be made in a right way. Researchers have found that there are two illusions that increase our propensity to trust too readily, too much or for too long. First is the illusion of personal invulnerability in this we are not ready to except that anything bad will ever happen to us. The second type of illusion is unrealistic optimism; some people think that only the good things will happen to them, they think they will always be above average. Unfortunately any indicator of trustworthiness can be manipulated or faked, some people (sociopaths) do it by smiling a lot, to maintain strong eye contact, to touch some other person etc and this attempt proves successful usually. So we have discussed why and when do we trust people and why we sometimes trust poorly. Now its time HOW TO GET TRUST BACK ON TRACK... We can never be certain of another's intentions. We simply have to choose between trust or distrust. There is much that you can do to reduce the doubt in particular by adjusting mind sets and behaviors... Here are some rules to follow:
v We on the first step should know ourselves, people usually fall into two categories , one who disclose personals secrets, things too early in a relationship showing too much trust before the right time and this in turn results in grief. Another kind of people are those who cannot trust people around and always expect the worst from other's motivations desires etc. these people have the feeling that they will trust the wrong people. The things should be balanced.
v Risks are taken but we should make sure that they should be small. Shallow trust is in order to show through some small acts that we trust so that we get trust in return. This shows others as well about the image that are willing to build relationships.
v The plan we tell to others should be articulated and clear. There should be facts and figures in our discussion so that the listener listens carefully and can engage with full commitment.
v It's important to send loud, clear and consistent signals. Sending strong signals not only attracts other tempered trustees but also deters potential predators who are on the lookout for easy victims sending weak and inconsistent cues.
v Our own point of view is important but when we are attributing with or sharing it with someone else we should care about their point of views as well specially about their dilemmas, so that we can manipulate what to talk.
v Presence of clear and compelling roles is important to trust. The role is a proxy for personal experience and guarantees expertise and motivation-in short trustworthiness.
These rules will help you make a good start on what will be a lifelong process of learning how to trust wisely and well even though these rules aren't complete.
